The Trademark Troll is Vanquished.

In case you are unaware, here is a bit of a back story. Tim Langdell (The Trademark Troll) is the founder of a game dev studio known as "Edge Games". The company was founded in 1990 as a continuation of his previous company founded in 1980, "Softek Software". However, for a game developer, the company did not release a single game for 15 years (1994 to 2009). So how did he keep the company alive?

He made the outrageous claim that he owned all the rights to the word "Edge" when used in any game related contexts. He spent those 15 years going after anyone who used the word or any variation of it. The name "Edge" became somewhat of a taboo in the industry. He went after EA Game when they released "Mirrors Edge", a claim he lost on grounds that he falsified documents to advance his claim against EA.

This guys trolling had a large impact on the gaming industry. "Soul Blade", the first "Soulcalibur" game, was originally titled "Soul Edge". However when the game went for release in the west, the name was changed due to his trolling. He has even had games pulled from the Apple and Google Play stores that contain the name "Edge".

However, back in 2010, a judge officially put this mans 15 year trolling spree to an end. The U.S. District Court ruled that his trademarks were not valid, but it took until April of this year to go into full effect. Guess it's time for this guy to actually start developing games, or GTFO.

Metro: Last Light - Optimum Settings

With the release of the next Metro game coming up, 4A Games has released it's system requirements, and the glorious power PC gaming can again be used to it's full potential.

Minimum

Windows: XP (32-Bit), Vista, 7 or 8
NVIDIA GTX 690 / NVIDIA Titan

Now, if you happen to not own one of Nvidia's Titan cards, don't worry. The reason you do not see the Radeon 7970 listed is becasue, as of the time of this release, AMD has not released an "official" competitor to the GTX Titan or 690, and the Radeon 7990 is just now being released. However, there are "Overclocked" versions of the Radeon 7970 that can keep up with the GTX Titan in keeping your frames well in the world of playable and stable, even though the Titan is currently the "fastest" single GPU solution on the market. So no need to drop $1000 on a single GPU card just to max out Last Light.

Skyrim is Done!

Bethesda has officially announced that it is done with Skyrim and is moving on to new projects, and the "biggest and best work yet.” Skyrim already has three DLC expansions, Dawnguard, Heathfire, and Dragonborn. As well as a high resolution texture pack that's simply amazing.

Bethesda has not officially announced what new project they are referring too, whatever it is, they pulled the entire Skyrim staff to work on it and give it the company's full focus. Making note that bug fixes and minor patches for Skyrim would still be released on an as-needed basis.

There are many rumors as to what this "biggest and best work yet" can be. It's know not to be Elder Scrolls Online, that is being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios, Bethesda's parent company. Could it be the next in the Fallout series? Or perhaps Doom 4 since id Software is under the gun to put out or possibly be shutdown? Or maybe it's "The Evil Within", a new upcoming survival horror game. See "Related Links" below. Who knows, only time will tell.

Ultimate Bioshock Infinite Steampunk Case Mod

Well known modder "FlashGordon" has created one of the most impressive and detailed case mods I have seen in a very long time, all based on the "Steampunk" theme of Bioshock.

The guts of the system are as follows:

Core i7 3930K CPU

2x GTX680 Video Cards

1200W PSU

120GB SSD

TB HDD

16GB of RAM

All water cooled

But who cares about all that! Let the pictures speak for themselves!

Link: http://www.overclock.net/g/a/812221/the-steampunk-pc-gears-spin-around/

id Software under the gun with Doom 4. Rage 2 Canceled.

id Software, a staple of the gaming industry for so long, has just one year to complete Doom 4 or face "drastic action" from it's owners ZeniMax. The problem is the lack of development and performance of the only game, Rage, id has released since the takeover and the fact that Doom 4 has been in development for 5 years, and no one wants to see Doom 4 walk the same path as Duke Nukem Forever.

It would seem that a lack of proper internal management and guidance has lead to Doom 4's stalled development, and left the game in very poor condition. So the decision was made to completely reboot the development of Doom 4 back in 2011. Now ZeniMax has said that id Software has one more year to complete Doom 4.

With the poor sales of Rage, even though the game itself got generally good reviews and is fun to play for how short of a game it is, and the debacle over Doom 4, ZeniMax said they would not fund Rage 2 even though the game was already in development.

So the focus is now all on Doom 4, and you would think this would be a good thing. However with Rage 2 being canceled, the team was merged with Doom 4 and as a result of the new management, and power struggles, issues arose that lead to a lot of the company's talent to leave in frustration.

So is this the end of id Software as a game development company? We will have to wait and see, but as of today, it's not looking good. It looks as though if they can not pull off Doom 4 on time, they may be reassigned as an engine only development team.

The Official Radeon HD 7990 is Here...Finally!

This beast of a card has finally, and officially, made it to release. Taking the crown away from the GTX 690 as the worlds most powerful graphic card. However, with it's late release, who knows how much of an impact it will have. It truly is a beastly card, with the reference design retailing for $999, however coming with a $325 bundle of 8 games. So also a better deal than the GTX 690 at the same price point. Though the list of games is not officially released, leaked information suggests these titles are all a part of AMD's new "Never Settle Evolved" bundle that will be included, in part, with many AMD GPU sales, with the full list for the 7990 is would seem.

Battlefield 4

GRID2

Company Of Heroes 2

Total War: Rome II

Splinter
Cell: Blacklist

Lost Planet 3

Raven’s Cry

Watch Dogs

Specs:

Impressive? Yes. Is it worth it? That's a matter of opinion. The GTX 690 has been out much longer and Nvidia is already working on their next gen cards. AMD is also doing the same. So if you are in the market for a dual-GPU single card solution, and you are a fan of the red team, do you buy the 7990 or wait for the 8000 series to hit the market and hope they get it's 8990 out a lot sooner than they did the 7990? Tough call.

Related Links and Information

The Evil Within is being lead by Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4 fame, and developed at Japanese studio Tango Gameworks. The game is set for release in early 2014, so we have a while to wait.

The Evil Withing Debut Trailer (Warning, it's a very graphic live action trailer, discretion is advised if images of horror disturb you. You need to be signed into YouTube in order to watch the trailer.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pjgkk5OT2M

The War Z at BWH Gaming

First off, I would like to thank everyone for helping to support our server. It's very well appreciated! Our server will be entering it's second month on March 18th.

For quick reference. You can apply for access to the server by posting the names of the characters you will use in the server, as well as agreeing to the rules of the server, in the following thread. Once you do that, someone will get back to you with access to the server.

http://www.bwhgaming.com/forums/page/1/m/323223/viewthread/5889425-bwh-war-z-private-server-apply-for-access

If you would like to donate to the server for it's monthly cost, you can do that as well, instructions are in the following thread. KILL ZOMBIES!

Tomb Raider - PC - TressFX

With the release of Tomb Raider came the release of a new technology, a physics engine with one goal in mind, the elimination of bad hair days in gaming. TressFX is a new technology from AMD that is taking on a thorn in the side of real time graphics rendering that has always existed. How to render realistic looking hair, in real time, that reacts to the environment and movements of the character, all in as realistic a manner as possible. All done a single strand at a time with each strand casting it's own shadows.

Some people might not get the big deal, it's just hair, how hard can it be? Not realizing the insane difficulty in rendering something like this in real time. Something that's nothing been done before outside of pre-scripted CG sequences. Then there are those of us who truly understand the complexity and power needed to pull this technology off.

Either way, in an already fantastic looking game, it's simply fantastic. You can check it out here in the short video I recorded climbing a radio tower. Watch it in HD, full screen, for best viewing.

AMD Next Gen "Richland" Elite A-Series APU's

With the huge success of the their APU line (Accelerated Processing Unit - A CPU and full dedicated GPU on a single die), AMD has announced the availability of the next gen in the series. With new features like...

AMD Facial log-in - Uses facial recognition technology and a webcam to allow quick
log-in to Windows and other browser-based websites and email.

AMD Gesture Control - Tracks a user's hand gestures, via webcam and advanced image processing and
machine-vision algorithms, and converts them into commands to control
functions on media players, browsers, e-readers and other popular
applications.

Improved graphic and
compute performance - Using the new AMD Radeon HD 8000 Series, supporting AMD Eyefinity technology, AMD Radeon Dual Graphics, and DirectX 11.

Enhanced power management - The 2013 AMD Elite A-Series enables up to 7.9 hours of web
browsing, 5.7 hours of HD video playback and up to 10 hours of resting
battery life on a 55 watt/hour battery.

AMD Screen Mirror - Wirelessly share content such as photos, videos, HD media streams, and webpages from a PC or
tablet based with any supported TV or
display with a DLNA receiver, or with other PCs.

Faster Turbo Speeds - Improved AMD Turbo CORE technology with higher boost frequencies than the previous generation.

These amazing little chips just keep getting better and better.

Speaking of Physics Engines - Havok Releases it's Next Gen Engine

The result of five years of internal R&D effort, the new engine
incorporates technical innovations in performance, memory utilization,
usability and simulation quality.

As most people know, there are basically three types of physics engines used in games today. PhysX, Nvidia's proprietary physics engine, limited to Nvidia hardware only without the use of a modified driver. Game engine specific physics. And Havok, that run's on just about anything.

Havok is very popular on consoles over any other engines for the very fact that it can run on virtually any platform, where PhysX can not, either for licensing or power reasons. This is also why Havok is used in more games than any other physics engine out there today.

This new release targets next-generation home consoles, mobile, and PC, while
continuing to offer full support for current generation consoles. Havok
will be showing off the next generation release at the Game
Developer Conference.

Here is a sneak peak of a high resolution look at Havok Physics technology demonstrated at
Sony's live event in New York. This demo shows a million particle
real-time physics simulation running on the GPU of the PlayStation 4. Just imagine what it can do on PC. If you know how physics engines work, this video is all the more impressive considering what it's doing on limited console hardware, even next gen, since it still behind PC technologically.

Nvidia has also announced PhysX support for the PS4. Something I find quite funny considering the PlayStation 4 (just like the XBox 720) will be powered by an AMD Radeon graphic core. On PC, this would be blasphemy and blocked by Nvidia at every turn. A sneak peak at a change of character by Nvidia? Maybe, it would be welcomed by a vast majority of the PC gaming world since PhysX is such a powerful physics engine, if they were to remove the blocks preventing the engine from running on Nvidia only hardware, or being disabled in hybrid systems without a modified driver hack (running an AMD Radeon as your primary GPU and Nvidia card for dedicated PhysX).

PhysX has been loosing favor for some time now since it's hardware locked. Havoc and game engine specific physics dominate the gaming world, and Nvidia GPU's only account for about half of the discrete gaming market, and loosing more ground with both next gen consoles going Radeon. Opening up the PhysX engine would be a win all around the board and would see a boost in GPU sales as people would build more hybrid systems to get the best of both worlds. Wishful thinking? Most likely, but only time will tell.

People don't like this or that, I was even one of them. However, Microsoft recently announced that it broke the 40 million copies sold mark, sounds good right?. The thing is, most of those sales have gone to system builders like HP, Dell, and ASUS.

Since the Windows 8 launch on October 26, Windows device sales have also fallen 21% versus the same period last year. Notebooks, which have had weak sales throughout the past year, saw the trend continue as sales fell 24%. So it's not even helping mobile sales. ASUS CFO David Chang has said, "Demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now”. The OS being designed for mobile and touch screen technologies that are still quite expensive.

There is a distinct lack of sales of Windows 8 in the consumer and business worlds as well, and new users of the OS are driving a demand for "mods" to make Windows 8 look and feel more like Windows 7 on their desktop and non-touchscreen notebooks.

Desktop sales have done better over the past year, dropping only 9%. Since Windows 8 was launched, part of those 40 million sales was just over half, 58%, of Windows computing device unit sales. Compare that to the 83% Win 7 accounted for four weeks after the Win 8 launch. You have to remember, Windows 8 is forced on the end user who purchases a new system at the store, and it's still a full 25% behind Win 7 as users buy up the remaining units powered by Windows 7. Win 8 tablet sales are almost non-existent, with unit sales of less than 1% of all Windows 8 device sales. So it's not even doing well in the market it was designed to target.

So all that really tempers the 40 million sales number, especailly when you compare it with past Windows sales and the current number of users.

Is it really that bad? What do you think about Windows 8, leave comment! :)

The War Z Pre-Purchase with Alpha & Beta Access

As many of you know, I have been following The War Z very closely, and plan on supporting the game for us here at BWH Gaming. Pre-orders for the game have became available for the following prices, good until Oct. 17th. War Z works somewhat like Guild Wars, you buy the game once, and there are no monthly fee's unless you decide to rent a "Stronghold" or standard game server. The game supports itself on server rentals and limited micro-transactions.

Pre-order here: https://account.thewarz.com/preorder/preorder.html

So what are these packages all about?

Survivor gives you the full game, plus access to the games beta that starts on Halloween, Oct. 31st.

Pioneer gives you access to the full game, plus access to the alpha on Oct. 15th, access to the beta on Oct. 31st, $15 worth of in-game marketplace currency, a stronghold server free for one month, 3 guest game keys that you can give to anyone to try out War Z for 2 days starting on Oct. 31st, and a special forum badge.

Legend gives you access to the full game, plus access to the alpha on Oct.
15th, access to the beta on Oct. 31st, $30 worth of in-game marketplace
currency, a stronghold server free for six months, 3 guest game keys
that you can give to anyone to try out War Z for 2 days starting on Oct.
31st, a special forum badge, and your name will be highlighted on leader-boards and in-game chat.

Strongholds? What the heck is a stronghold?

Strongholds are private mini-map servers, sort of like your own private base, such as a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. They are separate from the open game world and only accessible by those to whom you give permission. You can use them to store your stuff, for your friends, or community.

I will be maintaining a "BWH Gaming Stronghold" on top of the servers. So unless you want one for yourself, or some of the other package perks, you can easily get away with the inexpensive "Survivor" package.

Micro-transactions? Wait, this is not going to be pay to win right?

First and foremost, EVERYTHING that you will be able to buy in the marketplace for real money, is available in the game world for FREE.

The game will have a marketplace, outside of trading with other players, where you can buy limited items. Things such as cosmetic items, perhaps food or drink, a medkit, and very weak melee weapons, but nothing to give you an unfair advantage over other players. No guns or ammo will be available in the marketplace. Nothing to throw the balance of the gameplay in the direction of those with more money to spend on the game. However this will give a source of continued revenue for the developers beyond game sales and server rentals, to help maintain the game.

They are taking more steps than most when it comes to preventing "pay to win". So much so that one major drawback to paying real money for items is that they can be lost. Upon being killed, you can be looted by other players. So lets say you just bought a medkit, or a baseball bat in the marketplace to help get you going. If you get killed, those items can be looted by other players. Meaning, you just lost what you paid real money for.

Many games frown upon a system like this, however here the developers are trying to stress the point that all the marketplace items are free in the game world, you just have to find them. The marketplace is there to help you out, not give you an unfair advantage over other players. Personally, I like this system.

BWH Gaming Support

This will come in the form of two server rentals. Starting with a public server, probably about 70 players, with our name on it. Followed by a private password protected server you have to apply for access too, similar to our Minecraft server. Probably about 30 players. As the game progresses, and more maps are released, I may add more servers. They are relativity inexpensive, and if the community support is there, I would like to support War Z for a long time to come.

On top of the server(s) I will also be maintaining the aforementioned "BWH Gaming Stronghold" mini-server to act as a base of operations, and accessible to BWH members who apply for access, and are approved. This way we will have a place to store our stuff and trade among ourselves. The key to survival is teamwork, and we have a great community here, I want to use it to its full potential.

I will also be maintaining a "Most Wanted List". The War Z is a full on MMO zombie survival game, with both PvE and PvP. Other players can and will try and kill you, there will be bandits. However, killing survivors comes with risk. If you go down this path, the NPC guards in the safe zones will fire upon and kill you if you try to access the safe area to do business. The game also has a fully functional player mission/quest system, meaning any player can create a mission or quest for other players to complete for a reward. One such mission is a "bounty". If you are killed by a player, you can put a bounty out on that player and have them hunted and killed by others for whatever reward you set to give them. Missions are not confined to the server they are assigned in, but are accessible in all servers.

This "Most Wanted List" will be in addition to what is already in-game. If and when someone is taken down by a bandit in our public server, we can add the killers name to the list. Personally, I think it will add a bit more depth to the game, and something unique to our server(s).

Because remember, when you are killed in War Z, you don't just re-spawn like in most all other games, you character is locked out for up to a full 24 hours. There are real consequences to death. So if you get killed, you either have to wait for it to unlock, or buy another player slot and create a new character if you don't want to wait.

Closing

If you have any questions about the game, please feel free to ask in the War Z thread we have on the forums. I will do my best to answer them as fast as I can.

http://www.bwhgaming.com/forums/m/323223/viewthread/4073980-war-z-stuff

Now, how about some brand new alpha gameplay footage from the guys at Euro Gamer, showing some of the PvP aspects of War Z?

Zombies Everywhere! Run for the hills! (Gaming News Sept 2012)

Or, at least run to your PC to partake in the zombie apocalypse. The zombie theme has grown a great deal over the past several years, first in media and books, and then in video games. However 2012 is looking like it will be the true year of the zombie for the gaming world.

We have our fair share of zombie games and mods, most are alright, but most are also pretty much the same, and hardly any are "survival" based.

I am not talking about seeing how many waves you can survive in something like Black Ops or Killing Floor, or take out in a run & gun like Dead Frontier or Nation Red, or how far you can make it through L4D. I am talking about real survival, scrounging for food, water, medical supplies, weapons, ammo, everything. All in a persistent online world where all it takes is one dumb mistake to end hours, or days, worth of work. Trying to actually survive day to day.

This is where the genre is headed, the zombie apocalypse, it true stand-alone MMO fashion (not browser based like all the other "MMO" options at the moment), and it's long overdue in the opinions of many.

Right now, we have three major prospects in this new genre of MMO "zombie apocalypse survival".

Day Z

http://dayzmod.com/

Of course, many of you know what Day Z is, it's a mod for Arma II Combined Ops, with a heavy focus on "survival", even though it's really not an MMO in the traditional sense of the term. It still offers a real "survival" experience.

What it does give us is a large map, infested with zombies, where your character and some of their effects persist in the game world, at least until the next server restart in many cases. Where you have to scrounge for supplies, weapons, ammo, while under the constant threat of zombies and people just out to kill you and take your gear.

As it stands right now, Day Z is fun and quite popular, but has a host of issues that are really holding it back. Major server stability problems, server lag, item duping, countless glitches and exploits, hacks gone wild, balance issues, and poorly optimized using the very demanding Arma II engine. It also locks you in one map, with limited prospects of new maps or content in the near future.

However, all of these are being addressed, so most of this won't be a problem for much longer. Day Z will be going standalone in the near future, it will no longer be "just a mod", and it will have support from Bohemia Interactive. So it will only improve as time goes on. So it's defiantly worth keeping an eye on now that it will have the support it needs and deserves to succeed, especially since this single mod really boosted sales for ArmA II. It will be nice to see it properly rewarded and supported for that effort.

The War Z

http://thewarz.com/

Discussed in detail here: http://www.bwhgaming.com/forums/page/1/m/323223/viewthread/4073980-war-z-stuff#p23735032

This is a full on MMO zombie survival game from the newly formed Hammerpoint Interactive, a division of Arktos. Hammerpoint consists of a team of developers that have a wide ranging portfolio of experience. Working on games such as "Call of Duty Black Ops and Black Ops 2, Star Trek Online, League of
Legends, World of Tanks, Guitar Hero, MechWarrior (yes the old ones) and
more."

This game is taking the zombie survival MMO to the next level. Like Day Z, you will have to search for your supplies, food, water, medical, weapons, ammo, and so on. You will also still be under the constant threat of zombies and other players (bandits). You will have to work to survive, and many aspects of the gameplay are geared toward that, and realism, within the realm of game balance.

Where War Z differs from Day Z is that it will be a full on MMO game with all the bells and whistles. 250 players on any given server, starting with a single map (Colorado) that is only slightly smaller than the Day Z map, with full plans for more dynamic open world maps up to 400 square kilometers in size, DLC, constant updates and content additions, in game markets, a "realistic" skill tree, hack protection, the ability to fortify structures, have "bases", and so much more. It is looking to put the "Massive" in MMO zombie survival, with an emphasis on the survival and sandbox gameplay. With the ability to be played in first or third person. Currently for PC only.

Gametrailers.com has also recently released the first short video of alpha stage gameplay from PAX 2012, with more to come and a beta that's set to start sometime in the very near future. So yet again, we have another zombie survival MMO, the first real one, to pick from.

State of Decay

http://undeadlabs.com/about-state-of-decay/

Another upcoming zombie survival MMO from Undead Labs, a "Seattle, Washington-based game development studio that’s on a mission

Distrubeted by Microsoft Games.

This will also have many of the features of War Z, such as a dynamic open world, the ability to pick a base and fortify it, having to gather all your survival needs, and it looks like you can even go on rescue missions for either NPC's or other playable characters.

So there are a few things that caught my eye over the past couple weeks. Thought some of you might find some of it interesting as well.

Quantum Networking

"We have realized the first prototype of a quantum network”, Stephan Ritter concludes. "We achieve reversible exchange of quantum information between the nodes. Furthermore, we can generate remote entanglement between the two nodes and keep it for about 100 microseconds, whereas the generation of the entanglement takes only about one microsecond. Entanglement of two systems separated by a large distance is a fascinating phenomenon in itself. However, it could also serve as a resource for the teleportation of quantum information. One day, this might not only make it possible to communicate quantum information over very large distances, but might enable an entire quantum internet."

Though still a long way of in the future. The end goal here is quantum communication, no more wires carrying electrons, fiber optics carrying beams of light, but photons at the atomic level using quantum entanglement to transmit data over very large distances, nearly instantly. One of the major benefit side effects of this form of communication, is that by its very nature, is next to impossible to hack, intercept, or steal without the "transmitter and receiver" to know it happened. The reason being that quantum information can not be cloned. So if you intercept it, you intercept it, it stops there, you can not clone it and send it on. So it will be known its been done. Though there is no known way to even intercept it since quantum entanglement is a state of being where two atoms react exactly the same relative to each other over vast distances with no perceivable connection between the two. So there is no "stream" of data to intercept. Fascinating as hell is you ask me.

Multi-Core CPU Communication Bottleneck

"As CPU core count goes up, communications between the cores begin to hit significant bottlenecks. This is because these cores are still using the decades old data bus model of transferring data between each other, which prevents multiple simultaneous communications and is because it only works between two cores at a time. To get over this, researcher Li-Shiuan Peh at MIT is looking to use internet-style packet-switched networks right within the CPU itself. The idea is to replace the long wires of the traditional data bus with much shorter ones connecting one core to another and using a router on each core to arbitrate the data exchange between cores. This work is still very much in the research phase however, so don't expect any products based on this technology anytime soon. This approach isn't all that surprising when one considers that the PCI Express bus uses a network-style connection model."

Something to keep an eye on, this "bottleneck" has been well known for a long time. Not just as core counts go up, since this is already a bottleneck on 8+ core processors, but as the speeds on those cores go up. If those cores had a more efficient way of communication between themselves on the die, you would be able to get more data processed faster, even at lower physical core clock speeds. Pretty cool stuff.

The True Power of CryEngine 3

People ripped on Crysis 2 because EA rushed Crytek to get the game out, and the game we got on PC was a direct console port, DX9, and lightyears behind the original Crysis on the PC. Later on, they finally got to release the the full DX11 and high resolution version for PC. Yet even then it did not truly show off the power of the engine running DX11.

This is a short video that shows what this engine can actually do, rendering in real time, as it would in a video game. Amazing if you ask me. THIS is why CryEngine 3 hold top spot next to Frostbite 2 as my favorite modern game engines.

This video really needs to be watched full screen and in HD. Amazing.

On the same topic, Crysis 3 has been announced for release early next year, and you can pre-order it already! Wow, that's fast.

Nvidia Halts GTX580 Production & Seeks Other Foundries for 28nm Manufacturing

Nvidia has officially killed the GTX 580 in favor of the next gen 600's that hit the market recently. The GTX 580 is still a beastly card, so if you are in the market for an upgrade, you might see these cards hit a price drop soon. Might be able to pick one up before they are gone.

That being said, just like AMD, Nvidia is having trouble meeting market demand for its 600 series cards due to TSMC's tight supply of 28nm chips. So they are looking into contracting other manufactures to help meet demand. Such as Samsung Electronics, Globalfoundries and United Microelectronics. Both Nvidia and AMD need to meet market demand, and this may be the only way to do so, at least until sometime around first quarter 2013 when TSMC will be increasing its 28nm production line capacity.

AMD Lowers 7000's Series Radeon Prices

As most of you know, I paid $500 for my Radeon 7950. Well, now that the GTX 680 is on the market, and was priced under the 7970, AMD has lowered its reference design prices to reflect this. Though the AMD 7900's and GTX 680's perform very similar to one and other, the AMD cards were more expensive, so this was a very welcome change.

The reference MSRP for the 7970 is now as low as $479, a drop of $70 in many cases, putting it $20 behind the GTX 680. The reference MSRP for the 7950 is now $399, a drop of about $50 on average. The 7770 was dropped by $20 to $139. AMD has also announced that the upcoming and much anticipated 7870 will sell for $330.

AMD and Google Both Competing to Buy Out MIPS

MIPS is an application ARM processor architecture designer.

AMD comes from a decades old presence in the microprocessor industry, while Google is a satrap with smartphones, tablets, and other mobile computing devices thanks to its Android operating system. With Microsoft opening up to ARM architecture with Windows 8 RT, it is in Google's interests to hedge its bets on an alternative machine architecture to both x86 and ARM. The easiest way to that is buying out MIPS and funding development of powerful processors based on it. For AMD, it's a bid to stay competitive in the low-power processor market as Intel began making inroads to smartphone processor market.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Intel Ivy Bridge Not as Expected by Many Users / Worse OC Headroom Than Sandy Bridge

"Well it seems Ivy Bridge wont be the successor enthusiasts were hoping for on socket 1155. The new Ivy Bridge processors look to carry 95W TDPs instead of the originally expected 77W TDP Intel had been seeking. On top of this, the next blow to Ivy Bridge comes in the form of overclocking headroom, these CPUs tend to hit the wall at after 4.6-4.7 GHz due to temps getting so high it throttles down to protect itself from damage. The fact Sandy Bridge has an extra 200-300MHz over Ivy Bridge in terms of overclocking headroom and runs cooler at max clock has Ivy Bridge not looking so good. It seems the blame for these shortcomings is being placed on the 22nm Tri-gate transistors which have further increased transistor density in an already small die size, so much so in fact that heat can't be removed quick enough with air or water for high clock speeds. The speeds seen with liquid nitrogen have the chips looking stellar, but don't let that cloud your expectations, on air and water Ivy Bridge looks to be disappointing compared to what Sandy Bridge offered."

I know I am a realist, not an enthusiast, but I think people are being too nit-picky about processors these days. "Sandy Bridge has an extra 200-300MHz over Ivy Bridge in terms of overclocking headroom", that's not that much in my mind, and it will make little system performance difference. Sure, its fun to see what numbers you can hit, see how far you can push your system, but seriously?

Too many people think that OC and core speeds on their processors somehow relate to e-penis size. Too much misinformation out there on the benefits of core clock speeds vs architecture, hardware environments, and software designed to use them. More MHz does not always translate into noticeable system performance improvement.

Bah, guess this is just an old school tech head ranting. I apologize. haha
News Sources:

http://www.techpowerup.com/
http://www.legitreviews.com/

Discussion:

http://www.bwhgaming.com/forums/m/323223/viewthread/2840606-cool-tech-gaming-news/page/1#last

Pay to Unlock Everything in Battlefield 3?

Well that's exactly what you can do. For $40, you can unlock all the "un-lockable" items in the game that you would normally get by playing and leveling up. It's called the Ultimate Shortcut Bundle and it's being offered to everyone. With it you get all vehicle upgrades, all class weapons and gadgets, and all co-op weapons, for a total of 119 upgrades. They are also offering sub-packs for those who only want some of the items.

Kit Shortcut Bundle for all class unlocks for $25.

Vehicle Shortcut Bundle for $18.

Co-op Weapons Shortcut for $5.

Individual class unlocks sell for $7 each.

Air Vehicle and Ground Vehicle Shortcuts sell fro $10 each.

Needless to say, this has met with mixed feelings among gamers. On one side of the coin, not everyone has the time available to play the game for the hundred plus hours needed to unlock everything. On the other side, why should someone be able to pay $40 and bypass everything others had to work for?

Edit: These "shortcut bundles" are available on all three platforms. The PC versions available through Origin.

The Problem with Game Trailers

This GameSpot article brought up a good point that most of us have thought about, but have not really discussed. At what point does the gap between the game trailer and the game become too large? Too much Hollywood movie and not enough game?

Dead Island, Epic Games, and the Uncharted series are is used as examples in this video, but there are many others. You have games like Modern Warfare 3 making Hollywood style game trailers that do not represent the final product much at all. Then you have Battlefiled 3 where most all trailers are actual in-game footage, sounds, ect.

So what's your thoughts on this subject?

Personally, I would like to see less Hollywood CG or live video, and have trailers better represent what you get when you play the game.

Need for Speed Fan? Movie May be in the Works!

Warner Bros, Sony, and Paramount Studios have all expressed interest to Electronic Arts to make a movie based on the Need for Speed franchise. So far, no official word on anything else.
As long as its not just another "Fast and Furious" type film, and represents the franchise well. I am all for it.

Battlefiled 3 has been a huge success, there is no doubt, even though some hardcore fans of the series did not like some of the changes that departed from earlier Battlefield titles. However it has not hurt the games success, and just goes to show that it's able to change with the times, and keep up with an ever evolving gaming world. Well, now they are doing it again.

EA Games is considering offering a "subscription service" for it's hardcore Battlefiled fans, similar to that offered by Activision for Call of Duty. With CoD, you can buy "Elite", it's a yearly subscription that entitles it's holder to any DLC released during their subscription time for free, as well as other game perks that would be unique to subscribers. The service would not required in any way, and all the of DLC subscribers get for free, would still be available for purchase separately just like it is now. Though EA has not said if they plan on doing something similar, the idea is being considered, but it's not something that would be happening soon.

EA and DICE will also be setting a couple new milestones for the series this year. In June, they will be releasing a close quarters combat expansion, containing 4 new maps and 10 new weapons. These will be some of the smallest maps released in the franchise and all take place indoors. With full destruction intact, it will create an ever deteriorating and changing map as the battle progresses, and it promises to offer battles the likes of which no Call of Duty has ever even imagined.

Then, in the fall, they will be releasing the next expansion, "Armored Kill". These maps will be the complete opposite of close quarters, and be the largest maps in Battlefield!

"The goal and the theme of [Armored Kill] is to create something that is on the opposite side of the Battlefield scale from Close Quarters. Close Quarters is a very intimate, intense infantry experience. Armored Kill is
the big open, heavy metal vehicles, focusing on the big beasts of the
battle. We are introducing new vehicles into the mix. We are building
the biggest battlefields we’ve ever built before, so we’ll have the huge
battles. It is kind of the opposite…it is complementary part of the
spectrum for Battlefield 3."

So Battlefield is expanding out in both directions, and this is a good thing in my opinion. They should not limit the series to just one "type" of map or level design. The modern day battlefield is far more that just huge outdoor operations, so why limit a game based on that concept? Seeing these close quarters maps being released, followed by the largest maps in Battlefield a few months after, reaffirms my belief that Battlefiled 3 is still proving that it has far more to offer than Call of Duty can ever dream.

A few of the largest sites in the world, Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Amazon are talking about a "day of blackout" in protest to the "Stop Online Privacy Act" (SOPA). They are calling this the "Nuclear" option.

If they go through with it, it would black out these sites, as well as other supporting sites, for an entire day to bring notice to the world of true harm that SOPA and Protect IP can do to the Internet as we know it. They would be replaced with a warning about censorship and urging users to contact their congressman to protest the bill. In effect, it would bring awareness of SOPA and its threats to literally tens of millions of people, if not more, all at once.

Though there has been no public date set, it is assumed it would take place on January 23rd, the day before the Senate convenes to discuss the bill.

&amp;lt;br>

I had intended to post a little about a few different topics, then one of the many tech sites I subscribe to, motherboards.org (one of my favorites in fact), had already done a nice video that covered all three topics I was going to post about, plus one. Those topics being...

AMD's soft release of the Radeon 7970, the hardware will not be available to the general public until Jan 9th. Just to give some specs and info on the card.

SOPA, or the "Stop Online Piracy Act", that would basically allow the government to control your searches, monitor them, and even delete or deny access to sites they don't like. It's a lot more complicated than that, but that is a very generalized overview. Some say the chances of something like this passing it into law is slim, but others say its very possible, not matter the case, even the smallest percent is too much.

Funny fact about "sopa", is it means "garbage" in Swedish, and that's where it needs to stay.

If you would like to speak your mind against SOPA, you can do that here. This is a trusted site and is being linked by many sites to address SOPA.

http://americancensorship.org/

Last but not least was all the "crap" Best Buy is pulling. Not honoring Black Friday sales and or price match guarantees like they advertize on TV. So there are a lot of people who had ordered Black Friday sale items (Called Doorbuster Deals) from the Best Buy website, or in-store, that have received emails saying they will not be honoring the sale or getting their gifts. They are also turning people away who come in to take advantage of their price match guarantee, that states Best Buy will match any competitors price on the same item, even after you buy the item. So if you buy a TV from Best Buy for $600, and two days later you see it advertized at Wal-Mart for $500, you bring in that ad, Best Buy gives you that $100 difference. So needless to say, Best Buy is getting a lot of negative press right now.

This video also hits on the fact Microsoft will no longer be attending the CEA/CES, Consumer Electronic Show, since the shows organizers are charging too much for the booth and Microsoft is not seeing enough of a return from the show to justify the cost of the booth.

I do enjoy the videos from motherboards.org.
